2023 a year Cairngorm Bothies are recognised for their role in environmental sustainability

2023

Our award winning Cairngorm Bothies, an off grid, self-catering retreat nestled in an ancient Scots Pine forest continues this year to be nominated & win prestigious awards for our commitment to environmental sustainability.

Delighted to have received the most recent finalist nomination for the Driving Sustainability Award sponsored by BP in the Northern Star 2024 Business Awards by the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce. It has been a busy year of award nominations with the first being for the “Climate Action Award” at the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards in September. Our regional win meant that we went earlier this month to the VisitScotland Thistle Award ceremony in Glasgow and shared a wonderful evening with Scotlands finalists & winners. Wilderness Scotland won our category and are notably a worthy winner for their sustainable practices in their Adventure Travel business. Read more in The Times

This year’s recognition signifies our team’s efforts in mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable practices across our operations and facilities. We were recognised as finalists in the The Iver Salvesen Award for Combatting Climate Change sponsored by Murray Beith Murray in the Helping it Happen awards with Scottish Land & Estates and received a Highly commended certificate for our work to date.

Our company’s success in these similar & recognised categories stem from the Cairngorm Bothies off-grid design, relying on renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wood-burning stoves and our green tourism practises. Our business owner Dr Gordon Drummond comments “Our philosophy at Cairngorm Bothies is to promote renewable energy, together with the sustainable procurement of fabrics, furnishings, and consumables. This makes Cairngorm Bothies a novel and extra-ordinary proposition for the market. It gives the customer a flavour of the considerations of sustainable living, integrated into nature, in the spectacular setting of an ancient woodland.”
“We deliberately sited the Bothies as far from tie-in points to existing infrastructure, such as phone, water and electric.”

Beyond operational practices, Cairngorm Bothies is engaging in environmental education and awareness-raising initiatives. The company encourages guests to adopt eco-conscious behaviours and partners with local conservation organisations to support biodiversity efforts.
Our latest accolade of a Gold Award in the Green Tourism membership program is a testament to our teams dedication to environmental stewardship, aligning perfectly with the company’s vision of fostering a harmonious coexistence between tourism and the nature on our doorstep, and serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to embrace eco-friendly practices and contribute to a more sustainable future. We will continue to strive for our operations to have minimal impact on our forests flora and fauna environment, whilst providing our eco warrior guests with an unforgettable off grid experience.
